The 50-minute workshop will provide an understanding of the barriers and opportunities available to undocumented or DACA students navigating college. It will encompass information about the national and state policies that create barriers in the path to graduation for this population. Through this workshop you will gain the skills and knowledge to support this population as allies and push for more representation and resources to create undocufriendly college environments.

    This workshop will focus on:

    • Discussing misconceptions about the immigrant experience in the U.S.

    • Recognizing the immigration pathways and the policies that affect undocumented/DACA students

    • Describing issues that undocumented/DACA individuals face in Higher Education

    • Developing meaningful dialogue about the connections of undocufriendly institutions and social equity

More often than not, students enter college with a history of trauma, and attending college may increase their chances of experiencing further trauma or re-traumatizing events. A trauma-informed perspective, originating from social work practice and becoming more commonplace in educational contexts, provides principles that can guide academic advisors toward better meeting the needs of trauma survivors. Further, incorporating trauma-informed principles in advising offers benefits to all students, regardless of prior exposure to trauma. This presentation will provide an overview of trauma-informed care (TIC) in educational settings and will explore methods of applying TIC principles into advising practices.

    Presenters:

Joshua Hine serves as the Assistant Dean for Student & Academic Affairs at the University at Buffalo School of Social Work, where he also pursues his PhD in Higher Education at the Graduate School of Education. His research interests include student-parent mental health and trauma-informed approaches to academic advising and student affairs; he has presented research on these topics at ASHE and NACADA annual conferences and in publications in journals such as Journal of Higher Education.

Clara Keating is the Assistant Director of Student Services at the University at Buffalo School of Social Work. She has experience in teaching, research, college admissions, and financial aid. Her current professional interests center on holistic academic advising and student success and retention.
